About The Nigerian Community

Welcome to The Nigerian Community!

My name is Felix Ofiwe. I am the Publisher and Editor.

Before relocating to the United States, I was a News and Sports Reporter with The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Benin City, The Guardian Express (a division of The Guardian newspapers) and The Punch newspapers in Lagos, Nigeria.

Since arriving in the U.S., I have written for or edited several Houston, TX news publications including African World News and the now defunct African American Focus newspaper where I served as the founding Editor.

My wife and I started The Nigerian Community website for one reason – to help Nigerians living in the U.S. know what is happening around them so they can make the right decisions, everyday.

A few years ago, my wife and I were looking for a way to renew our Nigerian (ECOWAS) Passports and despite all efforts, no one could reliably tell us where to go in Houston, TX to renew the passports.

Today, most Nigerian Passport issues can be resolved by going to any of the several OIS Services offices worldwide.

We heard over and over that we needed to travel to the Nigerian Consulate in Atlanta or the Nigerian Embassies in New York or Washington, DC., to do so.

I called the Nigerian Embassy in New York and the Nigerian Consulate in Atlanta, and the individuals I spoke with had no idea what I was talking about. I thought that was ridiculous.

In this digital age, it should not be that difficult to get answers to questions as simple as the next time Nigerian Consulate or Embassy officials would be coming to Houston, TX to renew passports or issue visas.

Eventually, after weeks searching the internet, I found an article that said they were due to come to Houston, TX, but there was no definite date.

What a relief to know that, but I also thought it was ridiculous that such information is readily available to every Nigerian living in the U.S. I called a few of my friends and learnt they were also trying to get the same information.

That is why we decided to do something about it and the idea of creating a source of reliable information for the Nigerian Community was born.

The Nigerian Community website is not a typical news website. We built it more as a community website where you can read about what is happening in the community, instead of the typical news. You will still get news about Nigerians at home and abroad, but our focus is on the community in the U.S.

But what do we mean when we say our focus is on the community?

Well, here you will get the information you might not find anywhere else. Information about when and where to renew your Nigerian Passport, who is having a birthday party, the strides Nigerians in USA are making daily in every field of endeavor, our children’s achievements, marriage celebrations, deaths, new birth announcements, business successes, and more.

We are about you! We want to know about you, your goals, your family’s achievements, business successes and failures, and more.

We hope you join with us.

We are about our community, the Nigerian Community.

Thank you for stopping by today.

Don’t forget to tell your friends about us. You can do so now by email or through Social Media. We are on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, Linkedin and Google+.
